The Video Vault: Nine Years Later, Revisiting A Hodinkee Classic: Talking Watches With Jean-Claude Biver (Video)

There is nothing quite like being around an amped Jean-Claude Biver, at his home on a gently sloping hillside overlooking Lake Geneva, as he workshops a new ad slogan for TAG Heuer at decibels akin to a Who concert in 1976. (“Don’t Crack Under Pressure” would debut a few months later.)

In another context, you’d cross the street to avoid this man.

But this is the eminent Jean-Claude Biver, the one-of-kind industry titan who has seen it all in his roles at the likes of Omega, Blancpain, Zenith, TAG Heuer, and Hublot. And you are here to film an episode of a fledgling video series called Talking Watches. He forgot you were coming and is poking around for whatever watches happen to be sitting around. The aroma of baking brownies emanates from the kitchen. His beloved French Bulldogs snort about. And Ben is wearing the yellow sweater.

Talking Watches With Jean-Claude Biver (2014)

Talking Watches with Jean-Claude Biver published nine years ago this month, and is just as relevant today. In more ways than one, it stands out from all of the other episodes in the series: the first-hand, insider knowledge dating back decades, the raw passion for everything watches, the incredibly rare watches on the table – it is a veritable 20-minute history lesson of the modern watch industry, all told by someone who was in the proverbial “room.”

Perhaps you’ve seen it, or perhaps you’re 20 now, were in sixth grade when it came out, and are just getting into watches. If the former, it’s well worth revisiting; if the latter, you’re welcome. Enjoy.
