Diving and Doxa go hand in hand, and a big part of that comes from the brand’s incredible history of making dive watches during the golden era of SCUBA. Our friends over at Analog:Shift recently published an excellent look into Doxa’s remarkable past following the recent release of the new Sub 250T GMT. Written by the ever-talented Oren Hartov, it’s a retelling of how Doxa became an influential brand in the world of diving, the Cousteau connection, the special colorways, and the oddball dive watch design that ties it all together.

Doxa GMT

Founded in 1889 by a 21-year-old Swiss man, Georges Ducommun, Doxa, like many others, has been through many iterations. Still, it has become known by many as the one dive watch brand that is a brand “whose wares are synonymous with diving and beloved by professionals and amateurs alike — but whose history, due to sale and purchase, shutdown and revamping — is murky as the bottom of the sea,” Hartov describes.

As Analog:Shift founder James Lamdin says, “Stories told about the development of the modern diver’s watch are often filled with exaggerations, false claims, and bluster — not so for DOXA,” Lamdin says. “Not as widely known or as highly regarded as other Swiss manufacturers, DOXA’s contributions are authentic and important, and their no-nonsense Sub series watches are at once kickass tools for the discerning diver – and fun, historically significant timepieces for the discerning collector who ‘gets it.’

This article starts with the birth of the Sub 300 in 1967 and ends with the DOXA Sub 200T’s release in early 2024. It will be a good introduction for those unfamiliar with DOXA and a nice refresher for seasoned vets.
