Introducing: The Bait x Casio G-Shock DW5600 ‘Innovation’

Spread the love

What We Know

If you’re looking for nostalgia, there’s few places you could get as strong taste of it as you do with a DW-5600. Well, forget the taste. Bait’s new “Innovation” collab with G-Shock is like a punch in the face taking you back to the ’80s. It’s 1980s Apple meets modern memes and a twinge of green that makes me feel like I’m in a vintage arcade. And it’s awesome.

Based on the current standard DW-5600 frame, the watch itself traces back to the original legendary model from 1983. If you’ve handled one DW-5600, you’ve handled them all, for the most part, but it’s got a 42.8mm by 13.4mm resin plastic case with integrated band. The movement has time, date, calendar, stopwatch, CDT/STW modes, alarm and 2-10 years of battery life. But it’s the way that each release tackles the design that changes things up and I have a feeling this is going to be a cult classic.

BAIT has leveraged a lot of familiar design language from as a tribute to this early era of personal technology and early computing. From the colors to the creative (and irreverent) take on iconic symbols, and the typefaces of the ’80s, you probably immediately could tell where a lot of the inspiration came from.

The new release will be available in-person at ComplexCon Las Vegas (CACTUS CON) from November 16th and 17th for $150. The watch will then be released at U.S. Bait stores and online at www.baitme.com after the convention.

What We Think

There have to be hundreds of versions of the DW-5600 out there at this point. It’s the perfect watch for collaboration and iteration even if there’s not a lot of “innovation” despite what the name of this release suggests. But the best ones for me are the ones that are a bit funny and irreverent and this watch has it in spades.

In addition to all the very “Apple” touches of the font and branding, the watch also has some glow-in-the-dark details on the dial. For some reason it immediately made me throw back to playing “Virtual On” at the arcade of the pizza place I went with my parents as a kid. That scrolling green text that emulated the green phosphor monochrome monitors was all the rage in those futuristic video games and still hits hard today. I’m going to have to pick up one of these collabs, but I thought you’d appreciate hearing about it as well.
