Introducing: Furlan Marri’s ‘Red Hunter’ Celebrates The Brand’s Fourth Anniversary (Live Pics)
What We Know
Four years ago, Furlan Marri scratched the right itch at the right time with a Kickstarter star of a series with MechaQuartz-powered Tasti Tondi-inspired chronographs at an affordable price. It was the kind of thing that could have just been a Covid-era flash in the pan, but Furlan Marri turned it into a full-fledged brand. Now with mechanical dress watches, affordable flyback chronographs, an upcoming perpetual calendar, and a brand new Disco Volante with vintage touches for a modern era, the brand has a lot of options. Now, to celebrate their fourth anniversary, Furlan Marri is launching something new: the “Red Hunter” Fourth Anniversary model.
Measuring a newly-shrunk 36mm diameter with 11.6mm thickness and a 44mm lug-to-lug, the watch features a black lacquer stepped dial, starting low at the edge with a cream printed minute track, higher around the hour markers, and dipping lower again for the center. The Roman numerals aren’t just applied at one height across all levels, but are cut down to the lower level in the center. The watch has dauphine hour and minute hands and a bold red central seconds hand (with stop seconds mechanism).
The thickness might be a bit surprising, but that’s because of the main (unusual) vintage-inspired addition: a hunter (or officer’s) caseback that protects the Swiss La Joux-Perret G100 movement. Just like the dials, Furlan Marri had La Joux-Perret put a bit of extra effort into the finishing of the movement, with an engraved tungsten rotor with rose gold (4N) coating and snailing. The movement also has movement with Geneva stripes, snailing, and blued-steel screws. The outside of the hunter caseback is polished (so you could engrave it if you want), but the inside is engraved to celebrate the brand’s anniversary.
The watch comes with two French leather straps (one in black with red stitching and another in beige) for the 20mm lug-width, but for the first time, the brand is launching its own integrated (their term) stainless-steel bracelet designed by founders Andrea Furlan and Hamad Al-Marri. The bracelet has a hidden butterfly clasp with two buttons for release. I wouldn’t call it integrated, but the end links nestle nicely into the case.
The watch is available for pre-order from April 23 at 3 PM CET (9am Eastern) until May 4 at 10 PM CET (4pm Eastern) for $1,830.
What We Think
We have a few Furlan Marri owners on staff, but I guess you could call me the resident brand evangelist. That’s because I think there’s a lot to love about their watches. For the price, the finishing and quality can’t be beat. Take a look at the picture of the dial. black lacquer, multi-level, incut indexes. That’s way more attention to detail than any $2,000 dial I’ve ever seen.
Many people won’t want a 36mm watch, nor will they see a benefit of the officer’s caseback. You usually see that feature on things like the Chopard limited edition we released last year or (more frequently) Patek Philippe models like the ref. 5153J, 5227R, or Rare Handcrafts Perpetual Calendar Retrograde Date ref. 5160. But I like it. It’s hard to know every other option on the market, but I can’t seem to recall another hunter caseback for this price (aside from my pocket watches that are hunter case by design – where the carry-over comes from).
The metal bracelet has grown on me, but I’d probably wear it more often on a strap. I tend to like simplicity for bracelets, and this has a lot of contrasting surfaces, but the finishing is well done, and the bracelet feels robust. If you were an early supporter of Furlan Marri and believe in what they’re doing, this release is for you. For the price, it’s a very nice way to celebrate four years on the market and the community that supports them.
