Introducing: A New Generation Of The Breitling Superocean Heritage
What We Know
The Breitling Superocean Heritage has just undergone its most significant refresh since 2017, with a substantial collection overhaul launching today. For those like me, who have always found the divers a bit too large (with the smallest models measuring a generous 42mm), keep reading. This new generation introduces a brand-new size that I think will make many people happy — that’s right – it’s a brand-new 40mm Superocean Heritage.
The cases have been slimmed down, with the 40mm Superocean Heritage coming in at a 48.2mm lug-to-lug and surprisingly reasonable 11.73mm thickness. The lug design and fully polished case remain the same, although a more distinctive, mushroom-like crown design is introduced to soften the silhouette.

Across all sizes, this updated collection introduces a more refined dial design, incorporating some of the stronger visual traits from the Superocean Heritage ’57 line. Sitting atop the sunray-finished dial are triangular applied hour markers, as well as a distinct marker at twelve o’clock. With the applied scripted “B” logo no longer in gold, the entire dial adopts a more subdued look. The text on the dial is simplified, and the typefaces have also been refined, with the kerning of the “Breitling” logo allowing it to breathe a little more.

Straight-end-link mesh bracelets, a long-standing feature that made the Superocean so recognizable from afar, are also updated to a more integrated end-link design, with the mesh fitting flush against the case via a shaped link. Also available is a rubber strap option, embossed with a mesh-like pattern.
Flip the case around, and a new sapphire caseback reveals the Breitling B31 caliber. Seen earlier this year in Breitling’s 38mm Top Time series, the automatic movement offers a 78-hour power reserve while beating at 4 Hz. It offers COSC certification, with an allowed range of -4 to +6 seconds per day.

In addition to the new 40mm variants, the refreshed Superocean Heritage also introduces a smaller 36mm model, as well as larger models in 42mm and 44mm. The line’s chronograph is also refreshed, measuring 42mm and featuring the Caliber 01 chronograph movement. Pricing for the 40mm model starts at $6,200 (add $300 to swap in the bracelet), and the full specs and details can be found below.
What We Think
A new generation of Superocean Heritage was long overdue, but the wait was well worth it. Breitling has absolutely nailed the refinements towards the model. Design updates aside, the shift towards smaller offerings in the line seems very much in line with the trend these days (no more 46mm Superocean Heritage), and it’s actually a bit wild to think that there was no 40mm Superocean Heritage until now. The new 36mm models (in blue and the very intriguing mint green) also present an interesting new option as a very compact diver in a versatile unisex design. And plenty of large options remain, so it’s really a line for every wrist size now.

But what gets me most excited are the new design changes to the dial. While Breitling is certainly known for bold choices, toning everything down a notch has made these new models incredibly versatile. None of the changes seem likely to alienate current fans — after all, the changes are quite subtle, especially regarding the typography on the dial — but I think this sleeker look may open the brand up to a new type of clientele. It’s a good reflection of the direction Breitling has taken this year with several of its releases, and I hope this trend continues.
