In Partnership – Gatherings: Celebrating Two Centuries Of Pioneering Precision With Jaeger-LeCoultre’s New Travelling Collection
Precision was the word of the evening at a recent gathering of collectors and enthusiasts from the Hodinkee community at Jaeger-LeCoultre’s newly-reopened NYC flagship boutique. It was also the topic of the evening’s conversation between Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Product Marketing & Heritage Director, Matthieu Sauret, and Hodinkee Lead Editor James Stacey. Guests enjoyed cocktails and small bites while Sauret and Stacey delved into the brand’s long and fascinating legacy of precision, before admiring novelties from the brand’s new Travelling Collection, featuring the spectacular triple-axis Duometre Heliotourbillon Perpetual.
Over the last 190 years, Jaeger-LeCoultre has distinguished itself as one of the world’s most respected watch brands through its iconic designs and devotion to traditional watchmaking crafts. While products and technologies have evolved significantly over the last two centuries, finding new ways to achieve ever-greater precision has remained the brand’s guiding principle from the outset. This month, from September 10th to 24th, Jaeger-LeCoultre will pay homage to this legacy with “Pioneering Precision,” a new travelling exhibition and an accompanying series of Atelier d’Antoine Discovery Workshops at the brand’s Madison Avenue flagship boutique. (Watch enthusiasts on the West Coast, you’re in luck: the event will move to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Beverly Hills Boutique on Rodeo Drive from October 5th to 18th.)
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s dedication to precision began in the 19th century with the Maison’s founder, Antoine LeCoultre, whose obsession with improving the watchmaking process led him to invent a variety of machines for accurately measuring and cutting small components, including the Millionometre, the first device capable of measuring a micron. As the brand approaches its 200th anniversary, the pursuit of precision remains as important as ever. For proof, one needs to look no further than the Duometre Chronograph Moon and Duometre Heliotourbillon Perpetual, two new watches that are the centerpieces of the travelling exhibit.
Introduced in 2007, the Duometre collection was acclaimed for its pioneering use of separate barrels and independent gear trains for keeping time and powering the complications, an innovation that ensures an unusually high degree of accuracy. With an all-new Calibre 391 movement powering a moonphase, a day-night indicator and a monopusher chronograph that’s accurate to 1/6th of a second, the Duometre Chronograph Moon brings a new level of precision to the Duometre collection. Likewise, the Duometre Heliotourbillon Perpetual’s new Calibre 388 combines a perpetual calendar with a grande date function and a newly developed triple-axis tourbillon, making it as accurate as it is visually captivating.
In addition to putting these and other groundbreaking Jaeger-LeCoultre watches on display, the Madison Avenue boutique also hosts a series of hands-on watchmaking workshops in the newly dedicated Atelier d’Antoine space on its upper level. For the first time in the U.S., Jaeger-LeCoultre is presenting a new program devoted to precision in which participants will gain a unique perspective on the craft of watchmaking with an emphasis on the importance of precision. Combined with the opportunity to admire the newest Duometre models, the experience promises to provide a rare glimpse at how Jaeger-LeCoultre translates a centuries-old obsession with precision into some of the world’s most advanced – and beautiful – watches.
