Daniel Craig At The Olympics…Wearing A Yet Unreleased No-Date Omega Seamaster?
I’m on the ground in Paris, looking at the number of the ways that Omega plays a crucial role in Olympic timekeeping and statistics. Sitting at one of the events, I glanced over to see the new Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Ultra Light that was stealthily launched yesterday (it was one of two prototypes), causally on the wrist of a nearby Omega employee. Funny enough, I asked that Omega employee if there were any other new upcoming products he wanted to share – the response was just a laugh. But apparently, that laugh might have been a hint about another surprise launch for the Olympics. Thanks to our eagle-eyed colleagues at Gear Patrol who caught it first, it looks like Omega ambassador Daniel Craig has yet again worn an unreleased watch – this time a potential black, no-date Seamaster 300M.
I take full blame for not looking more closely at the photos Omega sent out of Craig at the Olympic “Omega House” in Paris. I tend to gloss over these celebrity press releases. Plus, what were the chances of him teasing a watch for a second time? Apparently the same as winning a poker game against a terrorist hedge fund manager with the CIA’s money. Low, but not zero. So here’s the details that stuck out.
Wait, what is that?
“Enhance…”
At first glance, the watch has the same mesh bracelet as the 60th Anniversary Seamaster 300M. But, instead of seeing “60” on the bezel, there is a dive-appropriate pip. The hands and indices are white, but rather than the lollipop seconds hand, it seems to have the traditional hand of the Seamaster 300M. And then there’s the fact that it distinctly looks black to me. Oh, as a kicker? Check out his badge, with a headshot just straight-up stolen from a James Bond film.
Gear Patrol pointed out some other things, like a potentially different crystal and a possible ceramic bezel – I would agree with both. They’re also correct in pointing out that this follows suit from a number of “unit watches.” These made for everyone from the United States Secret Service to Denmark’s Frømandskorpset (their naval special forces) and worn by former special forces member Denmark’s King Frederik X, including on the day he was crowned.
Our friend, Watches of Espionage, has tracked these watches, but notably, one “unit watch” that sticks out is one made for special police units in France that protect the Olympic Games in Paris. It’s possible (though unlikely, in my opinion) that this watch is one of those unit watches. The unit watches have more creamy lume, plus a fully matte dial and matte ceramic bezel. Hopefully, it’s Omega’s take on Rolex’s no-date Submariner, a watch a lot of people have been waiting for quite some time to get their hands on.
