In Partnership – Gatherings: A Celebration Of TAG Heuer’s Sailing Heritage And Our New Limited Edition Watch

Spread the love

The vintage nautical aesthetic of Holywater in Lower Manhattan made the perfect backdrop for an intimate gathering to celebrate the launch of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee. As the third installment of Hodinkee’s ongoing collaboration with the storied Swiss watchmaker, the limited edition watch pays homage to one of the most unique and collectible pieces in the TAG Heuer archive, the Ref. 2446C Seafarer from 1968. With a black opaline dial, two-tone blue and white sub-registers, and a domed sapphire crystal that recreates the profile of vintage plexiglass, the new Seafarer combines inspiration from the original chronograph with contemporary touches like the modern Carrera and TAG Heuer logos at 12 o’clock. Housed in a 42mm Carrera “Glassbox” case and powered by a new TH20-13 In-House Tide Indicator Chronograph Caliber, the newest addition to the Carrera family can be set to display high and low tide times at a glance – a useful feature for sailors, surfers, fisherman, and anyone else who regularly spends time at the beach.

Following their arrival at Holywater, a group of 30 watch collectors, journalists, and tastemakers enjoyed nautical-themed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while exploring “Decades at Sea,” an exhibit that used heritage displays, video, and other visuals to chronicle TAG Heuer’s rich legacy of watches designed for specific outdoor pursuits. The exhibit also included the TAG Heuer Carrera Dato Limited Edition for Hodinkee and TAG Heuer Limited Edition Carrera Skipper For Hodinkee, as well as archival TAG Heuer Solunar and Seafarer models. After the reveal of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee, which is limited to just 968 pieces, guests were invited to try on the new watch along with the other pieces on display.

The Seafarer is a legendary watch with roots in the mid-century, when TAG Heuer specialized in purpose-built chronographs for racers, pilots, adventurers, and outdoor enthusiasts. In the 1940s, Heuer began producing high-end, three-register chronographs in waterproof cases for famed outfitter Abercrombie & Fitch, including one with a tide indicator complication that could be updated to match local tide tables with the simple actuation of an added pusher at four o’clock Over the next 20 years, the design would evolve into the final iteration of the original Seafarer, the Ref. 2446C. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee brings this historic reference back to life as a thoroughly modern Carrera. Maintaining the color codes and bezel aesthetic from 1968, this collaboration embraces the modern spirit of TAG Heuer.

After admiring these new and historic watches in the metal, the crowd was treated to dinner and a casual discussion between Hodinkee founder Ben Clymer and Jeff Stein, the founder of OnTheDash. As one of the world’s foremost TAG Heuer historians, Stein illuminated the origins of the first Seafarer models in Heuer’s partnership with Abercrombie & Fitch during its heyday as a high-end sporting goods outfitter and how the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee evokes the romance and functionality of the original. Between Stein’s deep knowledge of horological history and Clymer’s enthusiasm for bringing rare vintage models back to life, the conversation was among several highlights of an evening celebrating TAG Heuer, seafaring, and a shared love of unique vintage watches.
