Introducing: Rolex Announces The First Authorized History Of The Submariner
Rolex has come with a different kind of release: a book. Oyster Perpetual Submariner – The Watch That Unlocked The Deep is a new 252-page book in partnership with publisher Wallpaper* and authored by Nicholas Foulkes.
Rolex says that Submariner is a “wide-ranging account of the Submariner,” chronicling the entire history of the model introduced in 1953. It’s the first authorized history of the Submariner. On his Instagram announcement of the book, Foulkes thanks Rolex for access to its archives, so the book will offer an exciting look at some potentially never-before-seen archival assets from Rolex.
As the title indicates, Submariner will also focus on the model’s role in underwater exploration. After the Submariner, the Sea-Dweller, Deepsea, and Deepsea Challenge (remember that one, the chunky, titanium, most water-resistant watch in the world?) continued to serve as benchmarks in the world of dive watches.
Submariner will also feature Rolex Testimonees (ambassadors) through the lens of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, which focuses on the environment.
Submariner’s author, Nicholas Foulkes, is an author and watch expert, and has also served as president of the GPHG jury.
We haven’t gotten our hands on a copy of Submariner yet, but the prospect of Foulkes writing combined with access to Rolex’s archives has me excited. I have no doubt there’ll be tidbits of information that’ll have collectors’ heads spinning. As soon as we can, I’ll come back with a report of any new info the book might have for Rolex collectors.
Oyster Perpetual Submariner will be available in English and French. Hardcover copies will be available for purchased from October 1, 2024. visit ACC Art Books for retailer information. A limited number of silk-bound copies will be available exclusively through the WallpaperSTORE* for pre-order from September 16-19, and for purchase after that.
