In The Shop – Introducing: The Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster ‘Grey Glow’

Spread the love

Former Quartz Crisis victim turned current comeback-kid with Guillaume Laidet at the helm, Nivada Grenchen has a track record of successfully reviving some of its most unique, dare I say funky, designs from its vault – most notably, the ever-charming 1960s Depthmaster. The brand is back at it again with a new take on its beloved “Pacman” dial timepiece – maintaining the essence of the original with a few quirky twists they created specifically with the Hodinkee crowd in mind. Offered as a Hodinkee Shop exclusive, we are thrilled to introduce you to the new Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster Grey Glow – a limited collection of 75 numbered pieces.

There is a definitive art to a vintage revival, and much of its success lies in the ability to channel the spirit of the original model while still keeping in step with the needs of today’s watch enthusiasts. While the brand hasn’t shied away from fun riffs on its Depthmaster, they always manage to keep the integrity that has given the series its lasting cult appeal. Following that line of thinking, the Depthmaster Grey Glow has nailed the essential details: the cushion case, Art Deco numerals, diving-centric capabilities, and sub-$1,000 price tag.

Most of the departures from the original on this watch lay in slight aesthetic tweaks to make it feel more fit for the Hodinkee Shop. Staying true to a color palette that’s right up our alley, the black dial of its predecessor has been swapped out for a matte grey colorway. While we’re most accustomed to seeing the Depthmaster on a bracelet, this special execution is fitted with a grey calfskin strap that adds to the neo-vintage style, reads a touch more formal, and coordinates perfectly with the color of the dial.

The Art Deco numerals and unique lollipop hour hand are classic Depthmaster, but now the dial features more luminous details than ever before. Turn off the light, and you’ll see all the hour indices, the pip along the bezel, and the hands begin to glow a vibrant shade of bright green. Even the text on the dial has received a rich coating of Super-LumiNova, making for a particularly fun-wearing watch when you run out of light.

Staying true to vintage sizing, the Nivada Depthmaster Grey Glow sports a highly wearable brushed and polished 39mm case. As far as the diving features are concerned, this watch is equipped with a helium release valve on the left side of the case, an impressive 1000 meters of water resistance, a 120-click unidirectional dive bezel, and a screw-down crown. Flip the watch over, and you’ll see the steel caseback with custom branded engraving, including the appropriate serial numbering from 1 to 75. Within the watch lies the Swiss-Made Soprod P024 automatic movement, which beats at 4 Hz and has a power reserve of 40 hours.

Packed with vintage 1960s appeal and adventure-ready features while sporting a new glowing color palette to keep things fresh, you can now get your hands on the Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster Grey Glow exclusively in the Hodinkee Shop. This is a limited collection of just 75 pieces, so be sure to grab yours while you still can.
